According to The Sun: The mystical atmosphere surrounding the disappearance of four-year-old Gus Lamont has only become more complicated following new alarming statements from one of the searchers.

Former SES member Jason O'Connell, along with his partner Jen, searched the South Australian desert for several days but unfortunately found no trace of the boy.

Gus Lamont disappeared on September 27 in the Australian desert

The couple searched for the boy day and night, believing he might have gotten lost due to the heat. They used powerful searchlights to carefully inspect every corner of the desolate area.

They were also looking for signs of foxes and predatory birds, as they assumed he 'might be in poor condition or even dead, and then animals could gather.' However, after more than 90 hours of searching, Jason concluded that the boy might not be in that area.

“He is not on this land. If he were in poor condition or dead, we would have heard foxes... been looking for predatory birds. There are no birds, which means he is not there,” the searcher told local media.

This shocking statement came after searchers had hoped for a positive outcome, believing they had found one of Gus's footprints in the sand — an important part of hope in their hopeless mission. However, police reported that they no longer considered the imprint 'evidence material.'

Assistant Commissioner of South Australia Police Ian Parrott addressed the boy's family to inform them that Gus was likely not surviving.

“Senior police officers spoke with Gus's family and prepared them for the fact that Gus might not survive due to the passage of time, his age, and the characteristics of the terrain in which he disappeared,” he noted.

Last known presence

Gus disappeared on September 27 while playing near a remote area of his grandparents, roughly 24 miles south of Yunta, northeast of Adelaide. His grandmother last saw him at 5:00 PM on a muddy hill, but by 5:30 PM, he was gone.

The only trace searchers found was one children's footprint about 500 meters from the area. There was no clothing, hat, or other signs of the boy discovered.

At the peak of the search, over 100 people were on site.

Survival experts pointed out that the chances of the four-year-old boy in thin clothing surviving several nights in close to freezing temperatures are extremely low. Gus was wearing a wide-brimmed gray hat, a blue Minions T-shirt, light gray pants, and boots.

“In the last 48 hours, despite professional advice that it is unlikely Gus survives, we continued and indeed intensified efforts to search for him and return him to his family,” said Commissioner Parrott.

The family holds onto hope

Family friend Bill Harbison issued a statement on behalf of Gus's distressed relatives.

“This has come as a shock to our family and friends, and we find it hard to understand what has happened. Gus's absence is felt by all of us, and we grieve for him more than words can express. Our hearts are hurting, and we hold onto the hope that he will be found and returned to us safely,” he said.

Local residents expressed concern that the boy may have accidentally fallen into one of the many unmarked mines or wells in the region. Police emphasized that they believe Gus simply got lost and was not kidnapped, describing the situation as 'very tragic' but without any evidence of a crime.

York Mid North police officer Mark Sirius noted that it is 'unusual' for Gus to stray so far, but 'who knows what goes on in the mind of a four-year-old?'.

The case is now officially being investigated as a missing person, but the police promised not to stop searching for answers.

“We will continue to search for new facts and will not stop until we can find out why Gus disappeared and, hopefully, return him to his family,” said Commissioner Parrott.

The situation regarding the disappearance of Gus Lamont continues to concern the community. The search for the boy demonstrates the determination of rescue services and volunteers who, despite the circumstances, strive to find answers and assist the family. Every new piece of information could significantly impact the development of the case, so local residents and relatives hold out hope for a positive outcome. It is crucial for all involved to continue searching for Gus and to support his family during this difficult time.
