Ukraine Accuses Hungary of Torturing Detained Cash-in-Transit Guards.
Ukrainian Cash Guards Detained in Hungary
According to UATV: Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has accused Hungarian authorities of serious human rights violations against Ukrainian cash-in-transit personnel detained on March 9. According to the ministry, the detainees were subjected to psychological and physical pressure, denied consular assistance, and subsequently deported. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between Kyiv and Budapest, which have often disagreed on matters of international law and Ukraine's sovereignty.
The detention was carried out by Hungary's Counter-Terrorism Center and lasted for 28 hours. During this period, the Ukrainians were not provided access to communication in their native language, a fundamental right. 'Although they were held only as witnesses, the detainees were kept in handcuffs for the entire 28 hours,' stated Ukraine's Foreign Ministry.
Official Demands from Kyiv
Furthermore, on March 6, 2026, Hungarian officials made the decision to deport the Ukrainian citizens. The Ukrainian government is now demanding the return of the seized vehicles and valuables that were in the possession of the detained men. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has also called for accountability, stating:
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine demands that all persons guilty of the abduction of Ukrainian citizens be held responsible."
It is worth noting that Ukraine has already secured the return of seven other cash-in-transit guards who were detained on March 5. This series of events has caused significant concern within Ukrainian society and on the international stage, underscoring the vulnerabilities citizens can face abroad. The situation risks further straining diplomatic relations between the two neighboring nations, potentially leading to escalated measures from Kyiv.
