Lake China in Odesa region is rapidly drying up: 8 villages will be left without water

In the Odesa region, there will be a major disaster – Lake China, which is an important source of water for numerous villages, is drying up. This lake provides irrigation for over 12 thousand hectares of land, but its water level is now rapidly falling, alarming local authorities.

Lake China on the brink of disaster

Research has shown that the water in the lake is becoming very polluted, and the oxygen level is 20 times below normal. The cause of the situation is untreated sewage, agricultural runoff, and other factors. Prolonged drought leads to the drying up of drinking water sources and losses in agriculture.

The local authorities have already developed an action plan, which includes replenishing the reservoir, cleaning channels, repairing sluices and pumping stations. It is also planned to apply to the reserve fund for financing to save the lake and provide the community with water.

Dependence on the lake for eight villages

There are eight settlements that depend on Lake China, and the area of irrigated land exceeds 12 thousand hectares. With the fall of the water level, there is a threat of losing water supply sources, crop failure, and decline of fisheries.

The event in the Odesa region indicates a threat to the environment and underscores the importance of the ecological state of water bodies for agriculture and local communities. Urgent measures need to be taken to save the lake and ensure sustainable use of water resources.
