Usatove refused to dismantle the Soviet monument: what they say at the village council.
In the village of Usatove near Odesa, they refused to dismantle the monument to 'Fighters for Soviet Power'. The local village council explained that according to the current legislation, monuments dedicated to the events of World War II may not be subject to dismantling.
Activists of the NGO 'Decolonization. Ukraine' report this.
Reasons for Refusal
In the village of Usatove, located a few kilometers from Odesa, they refused to dismantle the monument to 'Fighters for Soviet Power'. Activists are outraged, as the Soviet-era monument bears much communist symbolism.
The Usativ village council explained the refusal by saying that the word 'council' is associated not with the communist regime, but primarily with local self-government bodies. Officials also added that according to part 4 of article 4 of the Law on Decommunization, monuments related to World War II events may not be subject to dismantling.
'The images of the orders with a sickle and hammer on the memorial are related to honoring the participants of the partisan movement who fought against the Nazi occupiers during World War II. This object is dedicated to the memory of these heroes, who played an important role in the liberation of our community,' - the message from the Usatove village council says.
However, the Usatove village council added that they will initiate public discussions regarding what to do with the monument.
We remind you that recently we wrote about the removal of Pushkin's shadow in Odesa. And also about how activists created a scandal over the red star on the monument.
The monument 'Fighters for Soviet Power' in the village of Usatove has become a subject of public discussion due to its connection with Soviet symbolism. The local authorities explained that the monument may remain in place because of its controversial purpose but will hold discussions to determine further actions with it.Read also
