A monkey caused a power outage in Sri Lanka

According to Energy Minister Kanchana Jayakody, a monkey was responsible for a nationwide power outage in Sri Lanka. The animal was blamed for coming into contact with a transformer, causing an imbalance in the system. It is noted that power supply is gradually being restored, but some buildings, including hospitals, are currently using generators.

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) confirms that the outage occurred at a substation south of Colombo but provides no further information about the cause. The minister noted that engineers are working to restore the service as quickly as possible. Hospitals and businesses on the island, which has a population of 22 million, are using generators or inverters to supply electricity.

Meanwhile, the situation in Sri Lanka has worsened as two tourists died from suspected pesticide poisoning after their hostel room was treated for bedbugs.

Unknown disease and rat fever in Sri Lanka

About 10,000 people on the island of Sri Lanka are suffering from an unknown fever, suspected to be rat fever (leptospirosis). The disease, which spreads through rodents and insectivores, manifests atypically. Additionally, two fatalities have been reported related to this unknown illness.
