Trump again claims US interests in Greenland: called it an absolute necessity.
According to ТСН: US President Donald Trump has reiterated his claims on Greenland.
In an interview with The Atlantic, he emphasized that Greenland is an important strategic point for US defense. Trump noted that the island is surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships, making it vital for the country's security.
"We really need Greenland," Trump said, describing the island – a part of Denmark, a NATO ally – as "surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships."
Responding to questions about possible military actions by the US regarding Greenland, Trump advised Greenland to assess the situation on its own.
"They will have to figure it out themselves. I really don’t know… You know, at that moment I didn’t mean Greenland. But we absolutely need it. We need it for defense," said the US president.
It is worth noting that recently Trump has somewhat lowered his claims to Greenland. However, last year, at the end of 2024 – the beginning of 2025, he was actively drawing attention from Europe, NATO, and particularly Denmark with his statements about the United States' intentions towards this peninsula.
Trump has repeatedly emphasized that ownership and control over Greenland is an "absolute necessity" for the United States. Even within his circle, it was stated that the option of forceful annexation of Greenland to the US is not dismissed.
Thus, the issue of Greenland remains relevant on the international stage, as the strategic location of the island raises concerns for the United States regarding the activities of Russian and Chinese intelligence services in the Arctic. This may significantly impact the political situation in the region and determine the further US strategy on defense matters.
