A new train station will be built in Great Britain for £2.7 million: where it will open.
A new railway station for £2.7 million will appear in Great Britain
According to The Sun: In the small mining town of Kidsgrove, located north of Newcastle-under-Lyme, plans are underway to upgrade the railway station. The reconstruction project is already ready and awaits approval from the local council.
Newcastle-staffs.govThe cost of the project amounts to £2.7 million. It was developed by East Midlands Railway in partnership with National Rail with the support of the Kidsgrove Town Deal Board.
The town of Kidsgrove, founded in the 18th century, has historically been linked to the coal industry, although the mines have been closed for a long time. Previous proposals for new railway connections were rejected due to historical issues related to coal mining, the resolution of which would have required up to £13 million.
Station reconstruction plan
Now the railway station upgrade project awaits formal approval from the Newcastle-under-Lyme district council, reports RailBusinessDaily.
The plans include renovating the railway station, updating the main building, platform two (Island Building), and improving the surrounding area.
Kidsgrove is famous for its rural walking routes along the canals, as well as its convenient rail and road connections to major industrial centers.
Among the popular attractions of the town is the Harecastle tunnel, built in the 18th century, which is over two miles long. This place attracts not only tourists but also locals. Legend has it that the tunnel is haunted by the spirit of a young woman who died during its construction.
Another recreational spot is Clough Hall Park, located on the grounds of a former estate, which features a lake, playground, and picnic areas.
The town also offers a wide selection of independent shops, a swimming pool, and popular ski slopes.
The council leader Simon Tegg, vice-chairman of the Kidsgrove Town Deal Board, noted: “Investing in an improved railway station is a strategically important project in the context of Kidsgrove Town Deal investments.”
He added: “It combines all other transformative projects such as the renovation of the Kidsgrove sports center, a new cycling track at Newchapel, and sports facilities within the community.”
The new railway station also envisions the reconstruction of the waiting room, restrooms, and kitchen. The project includes new windows and doors, wooden cladding, an air-source heat pump, and solar panels.
The Island Building will receive a new waiting room and public space.
A new parking organization, a new bike rack, and improved access for pedestrians and cyclists are also planned.
A detailed design may be ready by spring 2026, and the work is expected to be completed by 2027.
This initiative to upgrade the railway station could significantly improve transportation infrastructure and contribute to the region's development, simplifying access to other industrial centers and increasing the attractiveness of Kidsgrove for tourists and new residents. Planned changes may also stimulate the local economy by creating new jobs and investment opportunities.
