Drone Strikes Target Crimea and Krasnodar: Explosions Reported in Kerch and Sochi.
What We Know About the Drone Raid on Crimea and Russia
According to TSN.ua: In the early hours of February 15, 2023, a coordinated drone attack struck targets in Crimea and Russia's Krasnodar region. The operation involved over 150 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting sites in Kerch, Anapa, and Sochi. The strikes ignited an oil products storage tank in Volna, within the Temryuk district. Explosions and the activation of air defense systems were widely reported during the assault. These attacks are part of a broader pattern of strikes on occupied and Russian territory since the full-scale invasion began.
Due to the unfolding events, the strategically vital Crimean Bridge was closed to traffic until 6:00 AM on February 16. Coinciding with the attack, a U.S. Bombardier ARTEMIS II reconnaissance aircraft was conducting surveillance over the Black Sea, highlighting the international focus on the region's security.
Background to the Attack
This incident followed a series of Ukrainian operations in the preceding days. On February 12, Ukrainian forces struck a Russian BK-16 boat and an RSP-10 radar station. The next day, February 13, an ammunition depot in the occupied territories was destroyed. The Telegram channel 'Krymsky Veter' (Crimean Wind) also reported related military activity on the Taman Peninsula, across the Kerch Strait from Crimea.
Commenting on the situation, Andriy Kovalenko noted: 'In Sochi, there are nights with arrivals.'
These events underscore a significant escalation of hostilities in the region, with both sides intensifying military actions. The situation in Crimea and the Krasnodar region raises serious questions about the future trajectory of the conflict. The persistent drone warfare and kinetic strikes point to a potential further increase in tensions between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. The presence of international observers, like the U.S. reconnaissance plane, also plays a role in shaping the strategic calculations of both parties involved.
