Massive Russian Drone Strike: Ukraine Downs 128 of 147 Drones.
Drone Assault on Ukraine
According to UATV: On March 18, 2023, Russian forces launched a large-scale attack using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) against targets across Ukraine. The assault involved 147 drones, with over 70 of them identified as Shahed-type models. Launches originated from multiple locations, including Oryol, Kursk, Bryansk, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, as well as Hvardiiske in occupied Crimea.
Ukraine's Military Response
According to Ukrainian military reports, air defense systems successfully destroyed 128 enemy UAVs. However, 15 strikes were recorded across 12 different sites, and debris from downed drones fell on three separate areas. Beyond Shahed drones, the attack also featured other UAV types such as Herbera, Italmas, and others. To counter the threat, Ukrainian forces employed a range of tactics, including:
- aviation units
- surface-to-air missile troops
- electronic warfare (EW) systems
- mobile fire teams
This incident highlights the ongoing intensity of hostilities in Ukraine and demonstrates the effectiveness of the country's air defense in neutralizing aerial threats. Given the scale of the attack and the variety of drones used, it is clear that Russia continues to refine its military capabilities, underscoring the need for Ukraine to maintain constant vigilance and upgrade its defensive systems. The situation also reinforces the critical role of international support in safeguarding Ukraine's airspace and overall security.
