Germany Delivers IRIS-T, Sweden Sends Gripen Jets: The Latest Weapons Heading to Ukraine.
Global Backing for Ukraine Intensifies
According to UATV: International support for Ukraine continues to grow as the war with Russia grinds on. Partner nations are not only supplying military hardware but also collaborating on drone production and refining defense strategies. Most recently, Germany handed over a launcher for the IRIS-T surface-to-air missile system, while Sweden contributed 16 Gripen fighter jets. Ukraine, in turn, purchased 22 aircraft and received Meteor air-to-air missiles.
President Volodymyr Zelensky convened a special session to outline Ukraine's next steps. He stated:
“We set priorities for the coming weeks: anti-ballistic defense, bilateral agreements on drone manufacturing and supply—including a Drone Deal with the European Union—and preparations for meetings in several formats.” - Volodymyr Zelensky
This signals Ukraine’s push to develop innovative defense solutions.
Joint Production and Emerging Technologies
In another major development, Kyiv and Ottawa signed an agreement to jointly produce drones, a key move to bolster Ukraine's military capabilities. The Canadian government emphasized:
“Through close collaboration with Ukraine and industry partners, Canada is helping speed up the delivery of equipment urgently needed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend against Russian aggression.” - Government of Canada
The United States also stepped in, supplying Phantom MK-1 robots for testing. As Sanket Pathak noted, “While deploying robots might sound like something from a sci-fi movie, it’s quickly becoming reality.”
Drones operated by Ukrainian forces proved their effectiveness in May, striking 18 Russian oil infrastructure sites. On the night of May 31, Ukraine hit an oil refinery in Saratov, marking a significant milestone in reducing Russia’s diesel production from 7.5 million tons to under 6 million tons per month.
Beyond military aid, Ukraine is proposing new defense initiatives. Denmark became the first country invited by Ukraine to join the creation of a European air defense system. President Zelensky highlighted:
“We are also preparing new solutions in Europe to establish our own European anti-ballistic defense.” - Volodymyr Zelensky
This reflects Ukraine’s proactive role in shaping security mechanisms across the continent.
Key areas of focus under Ukraine’s support framework include:
- Anti-ballistic defense
- Drone production and supply
- Humanitarian efforts
- New support solutions for Ukraine
Ukraine’s defense forces are conducting long-range operations aligned with approved sanctions priorities, underscoring the country’s determination to counter aggression.
The backing Ukraine receives from international partners, especially in defense, highlights growing global solidarity against Russian aggression. Recent events show Ukraine actively pursuing new technologies and strategies to strengthen its defenses. The deal with Canada and fresh military shipments underscore the importance of partnerships in ensuring security not only for Ukraine but for the wider region.
