Norway Steps Up Nuclear Safety Support for Ukraine Following Chernobyl Attack.
Bolstering Nuclear Security in Ukraine
According to Espreso.tv: Norway has announced new backing for nuclear safety in Ukraine during a visit by State Secretary Eivind Vad Petersson to Kyiv. This initiative has gained heightened urgency amid threats stemming from Russia's ongoing war. On June 7, a Russian drone struck the Chernobyl exclusion zone, hitting a building at a spent nuclear fuel storage facility.
Highlighting the grave implications of such strikes, Eivind Vad Petersson stated:
“These attacks also pose a threat to European and international security”- Eivind Vad Petersson. He emphasized that Norway will work to reduce the risk of radioactive releases and ensure the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant continues to operate safely. The State Secretary further noted:
“This is a serious reminder of the importance of nuclear safety in Ukraine”- Eivind Vad Petersson.
Norwegian Aid and International Cooperation
Norway's assistance in this area will be channeled through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) International Chornobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA).
This Norwegian support reflects the growing international focus on nuclear safety in Ukraine, especially as the conflict grinds on. Russia's actions, which jeopardize the security of nuclear facilities, underscore the urgent need for proactive measures to avert potential disasters. Partnering with international financial institutions like the EBRD could prove crucial in securing long-term stability and safety in this sensitive sector.
