New Nuclear Tension: How Trump's Policy Affects Control Over Iran.
According to the New York Times, the suspension of U.S. foreign aid has complicated the UN's control over Iran's nuclear program. U.S. government nuclear security experts reported the consequences of freezing two support programs for international nuclear inspectors.
President Trump suspended all U.S. foreign aid programs for 90 days. This led to the IAEA losing the ability to utilize qualified inspectors and technical equipment for monitoring.
According to NYT, one of the programs has already been resumed, but the other remains unavailable.
The IAEA refrains from commenting on the reduction of American aid, while the U.S. states that certain assistance to IAEA programs, including control over Iran's nuclear sites, continues.
President Trump expressed a desire to conclude a new nuclear agreement with Iran, despite the U.S. withdrawal from the previous 2015 agreement. He sent a letter to the Iranian side proposing to resume negotiations, but did not rule out the possibility of military intervention in case of refusal.
Ali Khamenei, spiritual leader of Iran: 'We will not engage in negotiations with arrogant states and will not concede under dictation. The U.S. is trying to impose its policy on us.'
