Blue Lights on Traffic Lights: How They Help Police Catch Violators.
This was reported by Jalopnik.
Strange Lights
Drivers in Florida have noticed small blue lights installed near traffic lights. These are called confirmation lights, which help police to observe which signal vehicles are moving towards from any angle. This allows officers to see if a driver crosses an intersection on a red light, even if they are not in the center of the action.
This installation has several advantages: only one police officer can control an intersection, which is economically advantageous. However, it also reduces risks for police officers as they observe from a safe distance. Fines for running a red light will also contribute to reducing this violation in the future.
How the Blue Light Works
Alongside Florida, such lights are already illuminating cities in Colorado, South Dakota, and Kansas. Research in Minnesota showed that accidents caused by running a red light decreased by 33% after this system was implemented. The Federal Highway Administration also confirms the positive impact of these lights on road safety.
Such measures are important as running a red light is a serious issue and one of the causes of deaths on the roads in the USA. Findings from the Institute for Traffic Safety show that in 2023, 1,086 people died in red light running incidents, and 136,000 were injured, half of whom were pedestrians, cyclists, and passengers.
Confirmation blue lights near traffic lights have proven to be an effective solution contributing to reducing accidents and improving road safety. This initiative has already demonstrated its effectiveness in several states in the USA, helping to decrease the number of violations and accidents related to running a red light.Read also
