NYT: Israel is checking if HAMAS leader Yahya Sinwar was killed.
Israeli military reported that they are checking information about the killing of HAMAS leader Yahya Sinwar in the Gaza Strip, reports The New York Times.
According to the publication, the military did not provide details regarding the assessment of the situation, but Israeli officials claim that the body of the killed militant is being taken to a lab for DNA comparison with Sinwar's DNA.
From the official information of three officials, it became known that the militant was killed during a shootout with Israeli soldiers in the south of Gaza. To confirm the identity of the deceased, a DNA test will be conducted, comparing the samples collected from Sinwar during his stay in Israeli prisons.
American officials reported that Israel informed them about the possible killing of Sinwar by soldiers. All informants were anonymous due to the delicacy of the situation. HAMAS currently does not comment on the events.
Israeli officials assume that the body might belong to Sinwar due to the resemblance to his appearance and intelligence data indicating his hiding in the south of Gaza. However, they urge caution as the DNA test has not yet been conducted, and they consider the ordinariness of a senior HAMAS leader participating in an armed shootout.
The death of Sinwar, one of the organizers of the HAMAS attack last October, which triggered the war in Gaza, could improve the prospects of stopping the conflict. The leader's death might force HAMAS to agree to Israel's terms or give Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a symbolic victory.
Let us remind you that Hezbollah has been experiencing financial difficulties due to Israeli airstrikes.
