Odessa's New Resort Status Sparks Outrage Over $3,500 Weekly Beachfront Rentals.
Social Media Erupts Over Arcadia Accommodation Costs
According to Novyny.live: A heated debate is raging across social media platforms over the price tag for a week-long stay in Odessa's prestigious Arcadia district. For two people, a seven-night vacation in a beachfront apartment now amounts to roughly 129,500 Ukrainian hryvnias—nearly $3,500. This figure has drawn sharp criticism, as the cost for just seven days approaches the 130,000 hryvnia mark.
The apartments in question are classified as Superior category accommodations, commanding a nightly rate of around 18,500 hryvnias. With vacation prices rising across Ukraine, this level of spending raises serious concerns about the affordability of domestic resorts. Social media commenters have not held back their frustration with these rates:
- One user remarked:
This isn't expensive... It's F***ING CRAZY!!!
- Another drew comparisons to international destinations, stating:
Almost free—it’s cheaper in Dubai. And in Egypt, 25,000 hryvnias gets you two weeks for two people.
Government Decision and Its Implications
Adding to the discussion, Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has officially designated Odessa as a resort and recreation area. This move is expected to generate an additional 300 million hryvnias annually for the city's budget. As of now, 27 coastal plots in Odessa have passed inspections and received certificates of readiness, signaling preparations for the upcoming tourist season.
The combination of high accommodation prices in Arcadia and the government's new resort designation is fueling lively debate among locals and tourists alike. These steep vacation costs could potentially dampen tourist flows to the region, especially when competing with more affordable international options. However, the government's decision to elevate Odessa to resort status may prove pivotal in attracting investment and upgrading tourism infrastructure, which could ultimately boost the local economy.
