Russian Strikes on Odesa and Zaporizhzhia Leave Dead and Wounded, Including Children.
Assaults on Odesa and Zaporizhzhia
According to UATV: On July 13, 2023, the Russian military launched severe attacks on the Ukrainian cities of Odesa and Zaporizhzhia, resulting in numerous civilian casualties—among them children—and damage to vehicles and infrastructure. In Odesa, three crew members of a commercial vessel flying the flag of the Republic of Togo were killed, while five others sustained injuries, including a 5-year-old girl. These strikes are part of a broader pattern of escalating violence in the region.
In Odesa, the shelling completely destroyed six buses, with an additional 11 buses and six cars damaged. The port infrastructure also suffered damage, which could seriously disrupt port operations. In Zaporizhzhia, two people were killed, and the number of wounded rose to 11. Among the injured are a 15-year-old adolescent and his mother, both currently hospitalized in critical condition.
Rising Tensions in the Region
Over the past 48 hours, Odesa and its surrounding area have experienced the most intense missile and drone strikes since the start of 2023. During the night of July 13, the Russian army launched three Kh-59/69 guided air missiles and 134 attack drones. These events underscore growing regional tensions and their severe impact on local residents' lives.
The attacks come amid an escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, raising international concern for civilian safety. Damage to infrastructure, particularly the port, could have economic repercussions given Odesa’s role as a key maritime hub. The increasing frequency of such assaults also highlights the urgent need for enhanced security measures and humanitarian aid for affected areas.
