Occupants Prepare Deadly Water for Donbas Residents: What is Known.
According to FREEДOM:
About Dangerous Water from Mines
Illegal leaders of the temporarily occupied part of Donetsk are seriously considering supplying water from mines, which could pose a threat to people's lives. Water from mines is completely unsuitable for consumption, even after purification, for which the occupants do not have proper equipment. This was reported on the FREEДOM TV channel by the director of the Institute of Strategic Research and Security, PhD in Political Science Pavlo Lisyansky.
'According to my information, the occupying authorities are seriously considering supplying water from the mines to solve the problem with drinking water in the region. This will kill people. Many do not even realize how dangerous this is,' noted Lisyansky.
The expert emphasized that water from the mines is very dangerous for health.
'The water from the mines contains radiation because some layers in Donbas are very radioactive. And the waters themselves are aggressive — they corrode even metal. But most likely, the occupying authorities are not interested in what kind of water is in the mines and how it will affect people's health. They are simply interested in a checkbox — 'we solved the water problems in the region.' This water is unsuitable not only for drinking but even for technical use,' said Lisyansky.
Lisyansky noted that purification will not solve the problem with this water.
'Germany has technologies for purifying such waters, but not all, only those with a certain proportion of nuclides, impurities, and so on. That is, the water that is currently in Donbas is already unsuitable for purification. Because when the water rises, they do not pump out the water. And when the water rises to the surface, it washes away all the rock layers and brings all this dirt up. The fact is that the mines needed to be kept dry and prevent flooding. Since 2018, the occupants stopped pumping out water. And according to specialists' calculations, by 2026 this water with nuclear waste will rise to the surface. And all the water in Donbas will become unsuitable for people,' Lisyansky noted.
Lisyansky also pointed to the increase in cancer cases in Donbas, and the situation may further deteriorate. The Russian side creates ecological and humanitarian disasters in all occupied territories, which require solutions at the UN level.
'The Geneva Convention stipulates that the occupying powers bear responsibility for the territory and population in the occupied territory. That is, there is responsibility. But the Russians do everything so that people cannot live normally in the occupied territories. They invested the most money in the militarization of children in Donbas instead of repairing the water pipeline. If they wanted, they could expand or completely replace the water pipeline in Donbas. But it is not profitable for the occupant to spend money on this. And the people in the occupied territories are also of no interest to the Russians,' summarized Pavlo Lisyansky.
Recall that in the summer of 2025, the occupied part of Donetsk found itself on the brink of a humanitarian disaster. Water supply ceased in Yenakiieve, Debaltseve, and Bunge. In other localities, such as Kristovka, Zhdanivka, and Shakhtarsk, only half of the already limited water supply is provided. Residents of Mykolaiv also suffer from this situation.
The situation with water supply in the occupied territories of Donetsk is critical. The authorities, unable to provide people with even the most necessary resources, create threats to health and life. In the realities of war, humanitarian issues often remain overlooked, but they are no less important and require urgent solutions from the international community.
