Olympics. Khizhnyak Defeated a Boxer from Bakhmut and is One Step Away from a Medal.
Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Khizhnyak had his first fight at the 2024 Olympic Games. In the round of 16 match, he faced athlete Filip Akilov, who was born in Soledar but now represents Hungary.
Akilov performed well at the qualifying tournament, where he earned an Olympic license. He was also taller than Khizhnyak, creating certain difficulties for the Ukrainian.
The first round ended in favor of Akilov, but in the next two rounds, Khizhnyak significantly outperformed his opponent and hit him many times. As a result, Khizhnyak became the winner of the bout, earning the victory from four out of five judges.

In the next round, Khizhnyak will compete with Brazilian Wanderley Pereira, the winner of which guarantees a medal.
The Ukrainian team has already won its first medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Olga Kharlan won the bronze medal in the individual event in saber fencing. Her path to bronze included four wins in five matches, one of which was a victory over Azerbaijan's Anna Bashta.
