Spain is investing 13 billion euros in airports: what awaits Barcelona.
Renovation of airports in Spain
According to The Sun: Spain is preparing a massive renovation of one of the largest airports, and this is just part of the overall update in the country.
The country will receive multimillion investments to improve its airports, increasing their efficiency and the ability to handle a greater number of flights.
AlamyAena, the company that owns and operates 46 airports and 2 heliports in Spain, announced an investment plan of €13 billion (£11.3 billion) over the next five years.
In September, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that this significant sum would be invested in Spain's airports from 2027 to 2031.
This is part of the DORA III program, which aims to enhance Spanish airports.
Update on Barcelona Airport
Barcelona Airport is also subject to changes – the master plan is expected to be approved in 2028, and work may start in 2030.
According to local media, part of the funding for the expansion of Barcelona Airport will amount to around £2.8 billion.
Part of this funding will also be used to implement the DORA IV plan, which covers the years 2032-2036.
Barcelona Airport, the largest in the Catalonia region, will gain even greater capacity thanks to the investments.
The planned target is to achieve a capacity of 90 flights per hour. Currently, the airport handles about 70 flights per hour, but during peak hours, the number can reach 90.
The expansion will allow servicing up to 70 million passengers a year, while in 2024, 55 million travelers passed through the airport.

Aena stated:
“This long-term vision is not only a technical necessity but also a strategic national decision – designed for decades ahead, allowing Catalonia to realize its potential in an increasingly interconnected world.”
The current works around the airport are also focused on ensuring sustainable development.
The master plan is set to be approved in 2028, with construction planned for 2030.
In addition, other airports will also receive updates; the Reus Airport will get a new arrival passport control zone.
Roads around the airport will be redesigned, and boarding and security areas improved.
Plans also include upgrades to the boarding area at Girona Airport, as well as a new summer terrace overlooking the runway.
Additional changes are planned in the arrival area for non-Schengen countries, as well as an upgrade of the bus area.
Aena also intends to support the construction of a pedestrian bridge connecting the future high-speed railway station with the airport.

Currently, the massive renovation and modernization of airports in Spain promises to significantly improve the country’s transport infrastructure. Through investments in airports, the government aims to lay the groundwork for increased tourist flow and ensure the efficiency of future air transportation. This will not only simplify travel for millions of passengers but also contribute to the economic growth of the regions.
