Grand Palais in Paris

One of the winners was the Grand Palais in Paris, located between the Champs-Élysées and the Seine.

Construction of the Grand Palais began in 1897 and was officially opened in May 1900.

Although this is not a new building, it closed in March 2021 for a major renovation that cost €466 million (£405 million).

The restoration work aimed to improve the quality of the existing structure, but elevators, stairs, cafes, restaurants, and a new entrance were also added.

The building impresses with a magnificent glass dome that originally served as the main highlight during the 1900 World's Fair.

The uniqueness of the Grand Palais lies in its variety of functions: it hosted equestrian competitions, fashion shows, car and aviation exhibitions, and will also host this year's Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024.

During both World Wars, the Grand Palais served as a military hospital, and local artists who were not mobilized decorated its premises or made prosthetics.

In the 1960s, one architect proposed to demolish the building to create a museum of 20th-century art, but his death stopped this project, and in 1975 the building was recognized as a historical monument.

The Grand Palais has several different zones, including the Nave - an open space with a domed glass roof used for art exhibitions and sporting events.

It also houses the National Galleries with important temporary exhibitions and the Palais de la Découverte, an interactive science museum.

Over the years, the museum has hosted exhibitions featuring works by Monet, Francis Bacon, Picasso, Richard Serra, and El Greco.

Getting to the Grand Palais from Great Britain is quite easy: just land at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, and in just over an hour you will have a chance to enjoy its beauty.
