Renovation of the West Highland Railway

According to The Sun: Not everyone had the opportunity to cross the Glenfinnan viaduct, but many know it thanks to the impressive scenes from the Harry Potter movies.

This viaduct is part of the West Highland railway line, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Currently, renovations and modernization costing £15 million are ongoing.

The West Highland line connects Glasgow with popular destinations such as Oban and Mallaig.

As part of the project, six miles of track and 9,100 sleepers will be replaced.

Network Rail warns of potential service disruptions. The line between Crianlarich and Fort William will be closed for nine days from November 7 to November 17.

The bridge near the Corrour station, the most remote in the United Kingdom, will also undergo reconstruction.

This railway station is located on a 57,000-acre area, near the Ranoch Moor, and appeared in the 1996 film 'Train of Hope'.

The Beauty of the West Highland Railway

Previously, the West Highland line was recognized as the best railway journey in the world by Wanderlust magazine.

This journey is often celebrated for its incredible landscapes – mountains, lakes, and stretches of rural scenery.

Last year, the restoration of the 124-year-old Glenfinnan viaduct was completed.

“Get access to Inverness, then take a train to Kyle of Lochalsh. This journey goes from east to west across Scotland – there are beautiful lakes and heather fields with deer,” says Tom Cheshire, who traveled 4,000 miles by British railways.

Tom noted: “From Kyle of Lochalsh, you can take a taxi to the Isle of Skye, which is connected by a bridge. Then take a ferry from the Isle of Skye to Mallaig, from which you can access the famous route that crosses the Harry Potter bridge, known as the Glenfinnan viaduct.”

Crossing the viaduct is not an expensive pleasure, especially if you don’t need to use a steam locomotive.

The public transport from Mallaig to Fort William, which passes over the viaduct, usually costs about £9.20.

Tom also mentioned a journey that takes place much further south in Cornwall. The trip between St Erth and St Ives takes only 10 minutes, but offers some of the best views.

It climbs high above the cliffs, providing stunning views of the sandy bays below, and costs only £3.10.

Moreover, the British railway line “that forgot time” was recognized as one of the best in the world according to National Geographic.
