New flights from Britain to Sibiu: why it is one of the most affordable capitals in Europe.
Sibiu: an inexpensive city in Romania
According to The Sun: Not many cities in Europe can boast affordability, but one such city is Sibiu in Romania. Here, a cup of coffee costs just £2.08, and there are entertainment options for every taste: from affordable spas to strolls through the Christmas market. Sibiu is considered one of the most undervalued tourist destinations on the continent.
AlamySibiu ranked 18th on the list of the most underrated tourist destinations according to Time Out. While there are no beaches here, the city can delight visitors with its architectural landmarks and echoes of medieval history. Thanks to new flights, it takes only three hours to get here.
Starting from October 28, Wizz Air will launch direct flights from Birmingham to Sibiu. Flights will operate twice a week — on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with prices starting from £17.99. In the autumn and winter, don't forget to dress warmly, as temperatures can drop below zero.
What to see in Sibiu
One of the main places to visit is Piața Mare, or the Great Square, founded in 1366. It features kiosks, cafes, restaurants, and shops. For Christmas enthusiasts, Sibiu is a true gift: during this period, the Great Square transforms into a huge Christmas market.
The Christmas market includes a Ferris wheel, an ice rink, festive lights, and, of course, plenty of booths with food and gifts. The festival dates have not yet been confirmed, but last year it started in mid-November and lasted until early January.
The 'Bridge of Lies' is another popular attraction, surrounded by numerous legends. At night, when illuminated, it becomes a perfect photo spot.

According to Tripadvisor, Muzeul Astra — the largest open-air museum in Europe — is a must-visit. Sibiu remains a budget destination: the average price of coffee here is 12.20 lei, which is approximately £2.08. Food is also inexpensive: a dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant will cost just under £30.
“I have been to Sibiu several times,” said Wizz Air flight attendant Niko. “You have mountains, so there is a lot of nature, the food is great, everything is cheap, and the people are very friendly. And don't forget to try Papanași. It's a Romanian dessert similar to a donut. Delicious, but bad for your diet.”
Papanași is a fried or boiled cheese donut usually served with sour cream and jam, and it costs just £4. One woman even traveled to Romania for a spa vacation with her mother because it turned out cheaper than in the UK, even considering the cost of airline tickets.
