Orban is going to Putin in Moscow: what will be discussed at the meeting.
According to ТСН: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban intends to meet with Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday, November 28. This meeting will take place against the backdrop of active negotiations between the USA and Ukraine regarding a new peace plan, while Orban openly accuses the European Union of wanting to prolong the war.
According to Hungarian government sources, the official program of Orban's visit has not yet been disclosed, although representatives from Budapest promise to release the details of the trip in time. Orban has maintained close ties with Putin since the onset of the full-scale invasion, and this meeting will mark their fourth in-person meeting since 2022.
Unknown agenda and accusations against the EU
Not long ago, Orban urged the European Union to urgently support the US peace initiative and to start direct diplomacy with Russia. Speaking to Donald Trump during a visit to Washington, he said:
'Your peace efforts are wonderful, but the problem is Brussels, the Europeans. They prefer to prolong the war because they still think Ukraine can win on the battlefield.'
Kiev's reaction to financial aid
Amid Orban's frequent critical statements regarding support for Ukraine, his position on financial aid did not come as a surprise to Kiev.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka noted in a comment that Orban's statements about blocking further financial assistance to Ukraine were expected:
'Hungary's position has not changed; discussions continue. We have ongoing dialogue and consistent work with the European Union.'
He also added that the European Commission has already provided options for 'reparations loans', which will help achieve a unified decision:
'This will allow the approval of the regulation regarding the allocation of reparations loan funds.'
It is worth reminding that last week, Orban sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, urging the EU to support the US 'peace plan' that entails territorial concessions from Ukraine and a reduction in the size of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He also claimed that Hungary will no longer support providing financial assistance to Ukraine and will block such decisions in the EU.
Orban's meeting with Putin could have significant consequences for diplomatic efforts in the region and the power dynamics in the relations between Ukraine, the EU, and Russia. Recent events highlight the tension in relationships between Hungary and the Ukrainian government, as well as the influence of the European Union on processes occurring in Ukraine.
