Orban Blocks €90 Billion in EU Aid for Ukraine – Why Brussels Can’t Fight Back.
How Viktor Orbán Plays the EU Game
According to UATV: Ahead of upcoming elections, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is sticking to his familiar playbook with the European Union. His latest move—blocking a €90 billion loan package for Ukraine—has raised serious concerns. According to Denys Kuzmin, an expert at the Center for International Studies at Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, the EU lacks the legal tools to impose meaningful punishment on Hungary for such actions.
'There are simply no rules that would allow the EU to expel a member state or impose serious sanctions over this kind of policy.' Denys Kuzmin, expert at the Center for International Studies, Odesa National University
This situation shows that despite criticism from other EU members, Orbán can continue his political maneuvers without facing major consequences. He is engaging in what is essentially political bargaining, and according to Kuzmin, 'there are no real, objective arguments from Orbán regarding the blocking of the loan for Ukraine.'
The EU’s Growing Headache
Orbán’s actions highlight the tangled political relationships between European nations and their willingness to prioritize national interests over collective goals. This ongoing stalemate not only threatens regional stability but also raises serious questions about the EU’s unity when it comes to delivering international aid and support during crises.
