Ukraine and Moldova on the Path to EU Membership

According to UATV: All European Union member states have agreed to launch the first cluster of negotiations regarding the accession of Ukraine and Moldova. This breakthrough came after Hungary's newly appointed Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, resolved a deadlock that his predecessor, Viktor Orbán, had maintained for a decade.

On June 12, 2023, EU countries approved a framework to begin membership talks with both nations. The formal opening of the initial cluster, titled 'Fundamentals,' is scheduled for June 15, 2023, during an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg. Accession negotiations with Ukraine were technically initiated in June 2024.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to all EU partners and each leader personally for this decisive step in favor of Europe.

Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa emphasized that the EU has taken a significant stride forward, acknowledging the determination, courage, and persistent effort demonstrated by both countries in implementing reforms. Péter Magyar also noted that Ukraine has formally incorporated provisions from a bilateral Hungarian-Ukrainian agreement into its action plan as part of the EU accession process.

The negotiations involve active participation from experts, including:

  • Ihor Chalenko
  • Yuriy Bohdanov
  • Oleksiy Buryachenko

This development opens new avenues for strengthening ties between Ukraine, Moldova, and the European Union, laying the groundwork for deeper integration and cooperation. The launch of accession talks marks a pivotal moment in the European integration of both countries, with the potential to reshape their political and economic landscapes. It underscores the EU's commitment to supporting these nations amid ongoing challenges and sets the stage for further reforms and collaboration across multiple sectors.
