Revealed: the worst railway stations in Great Britain for cancellations

According to The Sun: In Great Britain, the most problematic railway stations suffering from frequent stop cancellations have been identified. It turned out that one of the key railway lines is the most problematic.

Since the beginning of 2025, approximately three million scheduled stops have been cancelled in the country.

BBC research revealed that City Thameslink station has the highest number of cancellations among busy stations in Great Britain.

Analyzing data from 2549 railway stations, City Thameslink has cancelled one stop in 13, out of a total of 150,000.

This station, served by the Thameslink line, connects passengers to central London and to stations such as Cambridge, Brighton, and London Gatwick Airport.

Small stations are also suffering

Smaller stations on the Thameslink line, such as Earlswood, have also faced difficulties: one stop is cancelled in ten, making it the sixth worst in the country. Regular passengers note that this happens due to skipping smaller stations in order to keep to schedules for larger ones.

“When I started commuting to London regularly from Letchworth, I thought it wouldn’t be that bad since my station offers a direct route to London Bridge,” said travel reporter Alice Penwill.

She clarified: “However, almost every day, trying to get home, I see a message on the screen about train delays with no explanation.”

A student from Surrey, Kat Edge, who commutes to London via Earlswood, also expressed her frustration: “It’s very stressful, especially when you get on a train and in the dark you don’t know if it will stop at your station.”

Response from the rail operators

Thameslink and Network Rail performance manager Emma Pickard apologized for the inconvenience, noting that efforts are being made to improve the situation, although she also pointed out the impact of weather and occasional disturbances.

“We are aware that our service has not always been at an acceptable level, and we sincerely apologize for the delays this has caused to passengers,” she added.

A Thameslink representative also noted that City Thameslink station was closed for two days in February due to flooding, which affected the number of cancellations.

However, Michael Solomon Williams, an activist with a transport improvement campaign, stated that millions of cancellations are “unacceptable” if Great Britain aims to ensure a “reliable, accessible, and convenient” rail network.

In the BBC study, 78 stations were excluded due to lack of data. This indicates serious service issues on many important transport routes and worsening conditions for millions of passengers.
