Trump named a 25% chance of failure for the meeting with Putin: what this means for Ukraine.
Trump responded whether the meeting with Putin could be a failure
President of the United States Donald Trump predicts that his meeting with the head of the aggressor country Putin has a 25% chance of failure.
According to CNN, Trump called the upcoming summit with Putin an attempt to prepare the ground for a second meeting with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in order to reach an agreement to end the war.
When asked by a journalist if there is any scenario under which the meeting would be considered a failure, Trump replied:
'Yes, 25%'.
'This meeting prepares the ground for a second meeting. The second meeting will be very, very important, because it is at this meeting that an agreement will be reached', - said the US leader.
In particular, he suggested that during the second meeting there would be 'concessions' regarding borders and territories. According to him, Friday's meeting 'is like a chess game'.
'This meeting prepares the ground for a second meeting, but there is a 25% chance that this meeting will not be successful', - noted the head of the White House.
At the same time, Trump expressed his readiness to impose additional sanctions against Russia.
'Yes, I would do that. If the issue is not resolved', - said the US president, referring to the full-scale war in Ukraine.
In addition, Trump previously stated that Zelensky and Putin must negotiate the terms of peace themselves.
'It would be convenient to have a good meeting because I will let them negotiate themselves. I will not negotiate for them. I will let them agree themselves', - said Trump. During the communication with journalists, Trump expressed his assessment of the possibilities of the meeting with Putin and pointed to the importance of the second meeting for reaching an agreement to end the war. He also emphasized his readiness to impose additional sanctions against Russia in case the issues related to the conflict in Ukraine are not resolved.
