Swiss Peace Talks End Without Agreement on Occupied Lands or Nuclear Plant.
Swiss Negotiations Conclude
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the talks held in Switzerland on February 17, 2026, failed to produce any agreement on critical issues, including the status of occupied territories and the future of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The second day of negotiations concluded after just two hours, with the positions of the sides remaining far apart.
Zelenskyy noted that while some preparatory work had been done, the discussions were difficult.
"We see that certain preparatory work has been carried out, but the positions are still different,"he remarked. The President also expressed the view that military leaders understand how to manage a ceasefire and end the war,
"if there is political will."
Complex Stalemate
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remains under Moscow's control, a major point of contention complicating the talks. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is insisting on territorial concessions from Ukraine, a stance Zelenskyy has criticized.
"I consider it unfair that U.S. President Donald Trump continues to publicly call on Ukraine, not Russia, to make concessions for the sake of peace,"he stated.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy reported that, "Our American friends are preparing security guarantees. But they said - first this exchange of territories or something like that, and then security guarantees." These comments underscore the intricate challenges of balancing international security commitments with immediate political demands. The talks highlight the profound difficulties in achieving a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict.
The negotiations in Switzerland reveal the deep divisions between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the significant influence of international partners on the peace process. Russia's continued control of the Zaporizhzhia plant and demands for territorial concessions emphasize the complex and unpredictable nature of the situation. The need for genuine political will and sustained international support is increasingly evident for achieving a lasting peace in the region.
