Trump Sends Envoys to Zelensky: US Pressures for Peace Deal with Russia.
Meetings Between Ukraine and the West: Pressure for a Peace Deal
According to ТСН: On Sunday, two-day meetings began between representatives of President Trump, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders. Washington is increasing pressure on Kyiv, aiming to achieve a peace deal with Russia before the end of the year.
According to available information, negotiations between Ukraine and Western partners have proven difficult. Washington demands swift decisions, while Zelensky and his European colleagues emphasize that significant discrepancies need to be resolved.
One of the main points is the refutation of Washington's call for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from part of the Donetsk region. European and Ukrainian officials demand clear definitions of US actions in case of Russian violations of the peace deal.
These issues will be addressed in negotiations in Berlin.
Trump stated he was invited to participate in the Berlin negotiations but publicly doubted the value of the trip.
Special envoy for Russia, Steve Witkoff, is expected to meet with Ukrainian representatives and then negotiate with European leaders. Over the past weeks, he has regularly met with representatives from Moscow and Kyiv.
Russian officials acknowledged that the US peace plan could serve as a basis for discussion, but did not confirm their willingness to accept it. Many European officials doubt the Kremlin’s desire to end the war, noting that other NATO countries could also be at risk.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that “what is happening in Ukraine could happen to allied countries as well.”
On Wednesday, Ukraine sent a response to Washington regarding the US proposal for conflict resolution. Although some agreements were reached, Kyiv still refuses US demands to relinquish part of its territory.
Among the key aspects of the US plan is Kyiv's agreement not to reclaim lost territories, which may mean recognition of Russia's annexation of parts of Ukraine. This may also affect Ukraine's chances of joining NATO.
Zelensky in his statement emphasized that Ukraine has not yet received a response from the US to its proposal and noted that negotiations are influenced by power politics rather than values.
High-ranking officials in the Trump administration believe Ukraine will lose if hostilities continue, although Ukrainian military and European officials hope for the possibility of defending the country over the year with the support of allies.
Discussion on Security Guarantees for Ukraine
During the Berlin negotiations, discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine will also continue.
The UK, France, and other European countries are formulating plans for potential support to Ukraine, including possible troop deployments, although Washington has not yet made final decisions regarding this support.
President Zelensky has already noted that the main topic of the meeting in Berlin will be finding ways to end the war between Russia and Ukraine and the potential terms for future agreements.
Thus, the ongoing negotiations demonstrate the complexity and ambiguity of the current geopolitical situation. It is vital for all parties to attempt to find a compromise that will prevent further escalation of the conflict and promote stability in the region. At the same time, the issues of security and Ukraine's sovereignty remain at the forefront of the international community's attention.
