A Woman Was Bitten by a Bug in a Second-Hand Store

Every year on August 17, the world celebrates Second-Hand Day — a day that highlights the advantages of reusing items, environmental friendliness, and thriftiness. However, with these benefits, unpleasant situations sometimes occur.

The head of the parasitology laboratory of the Vinnytsia Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention and an entomologist spoke about a real case that occurred in the Vinnytsia region. In particular, they provided several important tips to help avoid risks while shopping in second-hand clothing stores.

Details of the Bug Bite Story in the Second-Hand Store

A woman from the Vinnytsia district contacted the parasitology laboratory of the Vinnytsia Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention. She reported that during a fitting of pants in the second-hand store, she was bitten by a large insect.

The first specialist she approached was an infectious disease doctor. Due to the size and appearance of the insect, the doctor suspected that it might have been a so-called 'kissing bug' (scientific name — triatomine bug). These bugs are dangerous as they carry Chagas disease — a serious infectious disease that affects the heart, nervous system, and other organs. Fortunately, the woman preserved the insect and brought it to the laboratory for research.

Research Results

Entomologist specialists carefully studied the insect and determined that it was not a dangerous triatomine bug but a pine seed bug. This bug feeds on the sap of coniferous trees and is not as dangerous as the triatomine one.

Pine bugs often come to Ukraine along with Christmas trees, wood, and also transportation. It is possible that this insect hid in the fabric during the transport of the clothing and ended up in the second-hand store.

How to Avoid Bug Bites in Clothing Stores - Tips

This case ended well, as the insect turned out to be safe, although still bitey. However, the situation reminds us of the importance of being cautious when using second-hand items.

Clothes should definitely be washed and ironed after purchase, even if they appear perfectly clean, new, and even with tags.

Carefully inspect items before trying them on. Pay particular attention to pockets, linings, seams — this is where insects might be hiding.

If you are bitten by an unknown insect — immediately consult a doctor. Try to preserve the insect and bring it to the laboratory of the Vinnytsia Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention for examination.

Before traveling abroad, it is advisable to find out about possible infections and pests that may be encountered there. This will help avoid dangers.
