Ukraine-NATO Council Results: Alliance Decided to Boost Assistance for Kyiv.
At the meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council on August 28, members of the North Atlantic Alliance reaffirmed their commitments to strengthen Ukraine's defense.
This was reported on the official NATO website.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the need for increased supply and support for Ukraine. "We must continue to provide Ukraine with the equipment and ammunition it needs to defend against the Russian invasion," he said.
The meeting was held at the ambassador level and was convened at Ukraine's request following Russia's massive attack on August 26. Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who joined online, discussed the current security situation and Ukraine's priority needs. "We discussed further plans for the supply of air defense systems and missiles to them. We need to strengthen our air defense," Umerov was quoted as saying by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
Recall that on August 26, Russia launched a massive shelling of Ukraine, using 109 drones and 127 missiles. As a result of the attack, at least 7 people were killed, 47 were injured. In some regions, water supply was cut off, and "Ukrenergo" implemented emergency power outages.
The Ukraine-NATO Council was established as one of the three elements of the plan to bring Ukraine closer to membership in the Alliance. At the first meeting of the Council on November 29, 2023, a work program for 2024 was approved, which includes energy security, innovation, and interaction.
