Deadly Incident Strikes Odesa Beach

According to Novyny.live: Following the tragic death of a woman on an Odesa beach, criminal proceedings have been initiated, and coastal safety inspections are underway, according to Svitlana Osaulenko, a deputy of the Odesa City Council. The incident occurred on June 23 when a 26-year-old woman was killed and a 39-year-old man was injured during a Russian drone attack that coincided with an air raid warning. This event has heightened public concern over beach safety amid ongoing war risks.

Currently, 27 beaches in Odesa are fully open to the public, with eight still in the final stages of inspection. Additionally, 15 leased coastal plots are undergoing necessary procedures to ensure visitor safety. Along the shoreline, approximately 19 shelters have been set up, including eight mobile units, with five funded directly from the city budget. These measures aim to address both immediate security needs and long-term preparedness.

Beach Safety Under Scrutiny

Svitlana Osaulenko emphasized that the tragedy has sparked widespread public outrage.

“After what happened, criminal cases were opened, and an investigation is now looking into why the beach was operating,”
she stated. Osaulenko also urged people to prioritize safety during their leisure time:
“Checking the beach comes first—this includes surveying the seabed—and you must take responsibility for your own safety,”
the deputy added.

While acknowledging that Russia, as the aggressor, bears ultimate responsibility for the attack, Osaulenko stressed that individuals must also play a role in protecting themselves. “We too must be accountable for our own lives and pay close attention to safety matters,” she remarked. These developments unfold against the backdrop of a persistent threat from Russia, underscoring the need for vigilance along the coastline.

The launch of criminal investigations signals the seriousness of the situation and the local authorities’ commitment to uncovering the circumstances of the tragedy. In a time of war and external danger, beach safety has become a pressing issue, affecting not only physical protection but also the psychological well-being of visitors. It is therefore crucial for citizens to stay informed about potential risks and adhere to safety guidelines while enjoying the coast.
