Croatian Prime Minister's Address on Ending the War in Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: During the 'Ukrainian Breakfast' event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković stated that the war in Ukraine must conclude before the country can join the European Union. Plenković emphasized the critical importance of peace agreements, focusing on two key factors: the timing of their signing and their historical consequences over the next 5, 10, or 20 years. His comments reflect a significant European perspective on the linkage between security and EU enlargement.

'Before deciding on Ukraine's accession to the EU, the war needs to be ended.' Andrej Plenković

This statement outlines Croatia's position of supporting Ukraine's European aspirations while insisting that a peace process must be finalized prior to signing any accession treaties. Croatia, which joined the EU in 2013, often speaks from its own experience of post-conflict reconstruction and integration.

Furthermore, Plenković cautioned that it is vital to avoid even the slightest suggestion of territorial concessions. He added: 'My advice is not to leave even an inkling of a hint that Ukraine could concede even a part of its territory.' This underscores his firm stance on the issue of Ukraine's territorial integrity.

The State of Peace Negotiations

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have concurrently noted the Kremlin's refusal to engage in peace talks, which complicates the situation for Ukraine and its European ambitions.

Plenković's remarks highlight how stability and peace are fundamental prerequisites for Ukraine's European integration. However, Moscow's rejection of negotiations presents a major obstacle to realizing these goals, casting doubt on any swift resolution to the conflict. The situation in Ukraine remains complex, with international support continuing to play a crucial role in its future trajectory.
