20 years of the Orange Revolution

20 years ago in Ukraine, the presidential election campaign started. It officially began on July 3, 2004. At that Time, there were 26 candidates, but after the first round of elections, only five candidates received more than 1% of the votes.

On July 4, 2004, Viktor Yushchenko announced his candidacy for the presidency of Ukraine. His participation in the election campaign was a response to the escalation of the political situation in the country, economic instability, and public dissatisfaction.

According to Member of Parliament Roman Bezsmertny, Viktor Yushchenko believed that the proposals for the development of the Ukrainian energy sector offered by Dmytro Firtash were more beneficial than those proposed by Yulia Tymoshenko. He noted this in an interview for Glavkom on the 20th anniversary of the Orange Revolution.

According to Bezsmertny, the poisoning of Viktor Yushchenko significantly affected trust within the 'Our Ukraine' party and caused internal disputes that led to the collapse of the 'orange affair'. He also explained the damage that the 'Our Ukraine' party inflicted on Ukrainian politics.
