The beloved Axe Valley Wildlife Park in Axminster, East Devon, has announced it will close by the end of this week, on Friday, October 10.

In a statement released on Facebook, the zoo said:

“With a heavy heart, we announce the sad news.”

The post read:

“As many of you may have heard, we are not the only business facing these difficult times. Unfortunately, it has become financially impossible for us to continue operating.”

The zoo stated that all animals, including zebras, meerkats, flamingos, and others, will be relocated to new homes in accordance with animal welfare standards.

Visitors were able to book experiences to work with zoo staff, caring for rare animals and finishing with a meet-and-greet session.

The park also offered a chance to be a zookeeper for a day to spend more time with the animals.

“When we opened our doors 17 years ago, we never imagined what an amazing journey we would have,”

“Thousands of wonderful visitors, school trips, and loyal members who have become part of our zoo family.”

“We are incredibly proud of the variety of animals we have cared for over the years, each of which holds a special place in our hearts.”

They also noted:

“We want to thank our incredible staff and volunteers, past and present, who have tirelessly worked with love, dedication, and passion to care for our animals and welcome our visitors.”

The post garnered 259 reactions, and comments from visitors started to appear.

One user wrote:

“I am truly devastated that you are closing. You have been an absolute joy to visit over the last 6 years with my annual membership.”

“You and your wonderful team will be greatly missed and will hold a very special place in my heart.”

“I can only imagine how hard it is for you to make this decision.”

Another commenter noted:

“So sorry to read this, we enjoyed bringing our grandchildren to such a wonderful zoo, they loved it.”

The closure of the Axe Valley Wildlife Park came as a surprise to many, as the park had been part of many families' lives for 17 years. Clearly, the funding situation is a common issue for many similar establishments that are also struggling in the current climate.
