EU declares war on Russia's shadow fleet: what is planned in Brussels.
According to ТСН: Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Baltic Sea has become a high-risk zone, and Europe's critical infrastructure is under serious threat of sabotage.
This information was disclosed by the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, on the social media platform X.
Incident in Finland
The statement came after Finland took decisive action. Kaja Kallas thanked the Finnish authorities for the swift detention of the vessel and its crew, who are suspected of damaging underwater cables.
While the investigation is ongoing, the EU remains vigilant and maintains close contact with Finland and Estonia.
EU Action Plan
In response to these threats, Brussels plans to significantly bolster its security. According to Kaja Kallas, the EU will continue to reinforce critical infrastructure through:
investments in laying new cables,
enhanced surveillance and monitoring,
provision of more repair capabilities.
Strike on the 'shadow fleet'
Kallas specifically pointed out the fight against Russian vessels operating outside the legal framework.
“The EU will act against the Moscow 'shadow fleet,' which also serves as a launchpad for hybrid attacks,” emphasized the diplomat.
Recall that a vessel departing from Russia was detained in the Gulf of Finland. The ship is suspected of damaging a telecommunications cable belonging to Elisa, which runs between Helsinki and Tallinn.
This incident highlights the importance of protecting critical infrastructure and combating threats from Russian strategies that could impact stability in the Baltic region. The various measures the EU plans to implement indicate the seriousness of the situation and the willingness of member states to cooperate on security issues.
