Police officer embezzled money from the father of a deceased defender at Azovstal: he faces 12 years.
According to ТСН: In the Ivano-Frankivsk region, a law enforcement officer from the police department is suspected of fraud on a particularly large scale. According to the investigation, he embezzled the funds that were paid to the father of the deceased defender of Azovstal.
Actions of the Suspect
Investigators found that one of the deputies of the head of the Department of Police Protection learned about a one-time payment received by his relative for the death of his daughter - a National Guard serviceman who was killed in April 2022 at the Azovstal plant territory in Mariupol.
“To gain trust, the police officer offered the victim to move to Ivano-Frankivsk, using his official position, arranged for him to work at the Department of Police Protection, and promised assistance in acquiring housing,” the Prosecutor General's Office reported.
Real Estate Acquisition
In 2023, the suspect purchased an apartment in a new building with an area of over 100 square meters for almost 2.7 million UAH, claiming that the housing was purchased for the father of the deceased serviceman. However, he registered the property rights to this apartment in the name of a close relative and, after the building was commissioned, registered the ownership right to her as well.
Legal Consequences
The law enforcement officer has already been notified of suspicion under part 4 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of this article provides for imprisonment for up to 12 years with possible confiscation of property. Currently, a question is being resolved regarding the choice of a preventive measure.
It should be noted that cases of fraud in Ukraine have increased, where criminals attempt to extort money from relatives of prisoners of war. This situation raises concerns in society and underscores the need for enhanced preventive measures to protect citizens from such fraudulent schemes.
