Prime Minister Opposes Dropping Math from Ukraine’s National Exam: Key Details on the Proposed Bill.
Statement by Yulia Svyrydenko
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has publicly opposed removing mathematics from the mandatory subjects of the National Multi-Subject Test (NMT). Her remarks directly address a legislative proposal that seeks to reduce the number of required subjects to three during the period of martial law. Currently, the NMT includes four mandatory components: Ukrainian language, mathematics, and the history of Ukraine.
The Role of Mathematics in Education
Svyrydenko emphasized that she sees no justification for altering the test’s structure by eliminating mathematics. She stated:
“I do not believe that next year, the year after, or at any other point, the structure will be changed and we will remove mathematics. That would be wrong. To me, the entire discussion around this topic seems strange.” - Yulia Svyrydenko
Her comments highlight the critical importance of mathematics in the educational process and raise questions about the future of the NMT under wartime conditions. The bill, currently registered in the Verkhovna Rada, has sparked debate among educators and the public regarding the wisdom of such changes to the education system.
As a result, the question of retaining mathematics as a compulsory subject may prove to be a pivotal moment in shaping Ukraine’s future education policy, especially as the country adapts to the new realities it faces.
