Poland’s President Strips Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle: Here’s Why.
Breaking News from Poland
According to Novyny.live: On June 19, 2023, Polish President Karol Nawrocki made the decision to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Volodymyr Zelensky. This move came in response to the Ukrainian president’s approval of naming a unit within the Armed Forces of Ukraine after the 'Heroes of the UPA.' The Order of the White Eagle, established in 1705, stands as Poland’s highest state honor.
In his statement, Karol Nawrocki explained that
“such a symbol demands not only merit but also respect for the values that form the foundation of our community”. He confirmed that the decision was reached after consultations with the chapter of the order. The Polish leader stressed the importance of upholding values that resonate deeply within Polish society.
Despite this action, Nawrocki reaffirmed Poland’s backing for Ukraine amid Russian aggression, stating:
“We have supported and continue to support Ukraine because we know that Russian aggression poses a threat to the security of Poland and all of Europe”. This highlights that Poland’s military and political assistance to Ukraine remains steady, even as disagreements arise over historical symbols and principles.
The revocation has sparked debate in both Ukraine and Poland, underscoring the complexity of bilateral relations. While the two nations share common interests, they continue to grapple with sensitive historical nuances that occasionally strain their partnership.
This incident involving the stripping of the Order of the White Eagle from Volodymyr Zelensky sheds light on the tensions within Ukrainian-Polish ties, particularly regarding historical issues. Although the decision may affect future cooperation between the two countries, Poland’s unwavering support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression remains intact. Moving forward, it is crucial for both sides to maintain an open dialogue to resolve contentious matters and strengthen their neighborly bonds.
