Former Ukrainian President Rejects Polish Honor

According to Novyny.live: Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine's fifth president, has decided to decline the Polish Order of the White Eagle. This move follows the decision by Polish President Karol Nawrocki to strip the same award from Ukraine's current leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Poroshenko announced his choice on June 20.

In his statement, Poroshenko argued that the Polish president's action was misguided and damaging to the relationship between Ukraine and Poland.

“This is my gesture in response to the decision of the President of Poland,”
he said, explaining his rejection of the Order of the White Eagle.

A Pattern of Declining the Order of the White Eagle

Notably, Poroshenko is not alone in turning down this honor. Viktor Yushchenko, Ukraine's third president, and Leonid Kuchma, its second president, had also previously refused the Order of the White Eagle. These actions highlight the significance of the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Poland amid ongoing political developments.

Poroshenko's refusal of the Order of the White Eagle underscores a growing strain in Ukrainian-Polish relations, triggered by the decision to revoke Zelenskyy's award. This gesture, combined with similar rejections from former presidents, may point to deeper political discontent and a desire to assert Ukraine's standing on the global stage. The situation could have repercussions for bilateral ties, which are already under pressure from the shared challenges both nations face today.
