Ukraine's Security Under Threat? The 9-Million-Subscriber Telegram Channel 'Trukha' Under Scrutiny.
How the Telegram Channel 'Trukha' Shapes Ukraine's Information Landscape
According to Espreso.tv: The Telegram channel known as 'Trukha' has amassed 9 million subscribers across its network of news channels, giving it substantial power to influence public opinion in Ukraine. By comparison, similar channels in Russia and Iran play a comparable role in shaping discourse, especially among younger audiences. This analysis examines how 'Trukha' affects the country's information environment.
Shifting News Consumption Habits
A striking 81% of Ukrainians aged 18 to 55 now consider Russian Telegram their primary news source. This reflects a broader trend: one in three Ukrainians, and one in two young people, rely on social media for updates. Since 2022, President Volodymyr Zelensky has held only 5 press meetings with Ukrainian journalists, yet he has recorded over 1,500 video addresses to the public. Each address averages 5 to 8 minutes, amounting to roughly 200 hours of direct communication.

However, Fediyenko, head of the relevant parliamentary committee for the 'Servant of the People' party, warns that 'Telegram is a threat to Ukraine's security.' These comments highlight the growing tension between traditional media and new communication platforms, as social media's role in the information space becomes increasingly controversial.
The rise of 'Trukha' reflects a fundamental shift in how Ukrainians consume news, a change that carries serious implications for politics and society. As younger generations turn more to social networks for information, the government's response to this trend will be critical. At the same time, concerns over the security and reliability of content on Telegram underscore the urgent need for dialogue between legacy media and emerging channels to ensure the public receives trustworthy and objective information.
