1400 offenders detained at the border with Belarus: new trend worries the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
According to ТСН: Despite difficult weather conditions and high risks to life, attempts to illegally cross the border of Ukraine are not ceasing. The highest number of offenders has been recorded at the borders with Moldova and Romania, however, this year new trends have emerged in the direction of Belarus.
The spokesman of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGSU), Andriy Demchenko, spoke about the situation at the border.
He noted that border guards face people every day trying to illegally leave the country by avoiding official checkpoints.
"Every day we detain citizens who want to illegally cross the border. And this happens in many directions. First of all, the most of them are detained at the border with Romania and Moldova," Demchenko noted.
He also added that the seasonal factor plays its role. With the onset of autumn and winter, the number of those wishing to attempt crossing the border has decreased compared to the summer period.
This is primarily related to the deterioration of weather conditions, as the escape routes often go through frozen rivers or hard-to-reach snowy areas. However, even the danger of war does not stop everyone.
The situation at the northern border
The SBGSU has paid particular attention to the northern border. Although this direction is considered one of the most fortified and mined due to threats from the aggressor, the number of illegal attempts to cross the border has increased.
"As of now, nearly 1400 offenders have been detained at the border section with Belarus," Andriy Demchenko reported.
The spokesman clarified that in absolute numbers this is significantly less than at the borders with EU countries. However, the fact of increasing attempts to illegally cross towards Belarus is an important signal for border guards.
Recall that recently in Lviv Oblast, a draft dodger escaped to Poland when a border guard stepped away to use the restroom.
The actions of border guards in Ukraine are focused on preventing illegal border crossings, especially in conditions of aggression from neighboring states. Cooperation with international partners remains important to enhance security at the borders and protect state sovereignty.
