The impressive marble atrium of the station became the scene of clashes as protesters with Palestinian flags destroyed barriers and clashed with police defending themselves with shields and helmets.

The air was filled with tear gas as the police tried to disperse the crowd.

Government response and nationwide strike

In Italy's financial capital, at least 10 people were arrested, while shocked passengers watched the riots unfold on the streets.

“This was violence and destruction that has nothing to do with solidarity and will not change the lives of people in Gaza even a bit,”

says Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, condemning the protesters' actions.

These riots have become part of a nationwide strike that paralyzed schools, ports, transportation, and public services.

From Turin to Palermo, tens of thousands of people took to the streets to express support for Palestinians under pressure in Gaza.

International response to the conflict

Yesterday, outside the American consulate in Milan, protesters set fire to flags of Israel, the USA, the EU, and NATO.

The outbreak of violence in Italy occurred against the backdrop of rising international tensions related to the war in Gaza.

“We are receiving lessons in dignity and resistance from the Palestinian people,”

noted Ricky, a protester from Genoa.

In the UK, Labour Party representative Keir Starmer announced recognition of Palestine, which became “a victory for the just cause.”

Starmer's comments regarding the recognition of Palestinian statehood sparked a wave of outrage, including from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump.

Considering the rising tensions in Europe and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, events in Milan may indicate the potential for an escalation of protests in the near future.
