Satellite Imagery Reveals Anti-Drone Cages Installed on Russian Submarines in Novorossiysk.
Growing Security Concerns for Kilo-Class Submarines
According to Espreso.tv: British intelligence has reported that protective cages, often referred to as 'barbecue grills' or 'mangals,' have been fitted onto Kilo-class submarines stationed in Novorossiysk. This development signals heightened Russian fears of potential Ukrainian strikes. Satellite image analysis conducted between June 6 and June 9 shows that three of the four Kilo-class vessels in the port have already received these defensive structures, which were previously used to shield tanks and artillery. The move underscores Russia's escalating security measures in the region.
Recent Events Shaping the Military Landscape
The fourth submarine is expected to be equipped with a similar cage in the near future. This decision appears to be a direct response to events on the night of June 8, when drones attacked the Russian city of Novorossiysk. During that assault, at least 50 explosions were recorded at the Sheskharis oil terminal. The Kilo-class submarines are known to carry Kalibr cruise missiles, making them strategically significant assets amid rising tensions.
The installation of protective cages on these submarines indicates that Russian military forces are actively working to safeguard their assets in the area as the conflict with Ukraine intensifies. These actions highlight the escalation of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, particularly concerning attacks on critical infrastructure. Russia's growing military readiness—including the reinforcement of submarine defenses—reflects serious security concerns triggered by unfolding events in the region. In turn, this could further destabilize the Black Sea area and influence the military strategies of both sides.
