Zelensky rejected US proposals regarding Donetsk: called them unjust.
According to ТСН: President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his position regarding the proposals from the United States concerning Donetsk, which he believes align more with Russia's interests and do not take into account Ukraine's needs.
The president noted that he had familiarized himself with the American side's initiatives for a possible compromise to resolve the situation in the region, but these ideas are unacceptable for Ukraine.
What the US is proposing
According to the president, the American side proposes a scenario in which Ukrainian forces withdraw from certain territories in Donetsk, while Russian armed forces do not enter these areas. This essentially implies the creation of a 'free economic zone' or a demilitarized area with unclear governance.
“They do not know who will govern this territory. Ukrainian forces seemingly withdraw, Russian ones do not enter. But who is responsible for this zone – an open question,”
— he explained.
Zelensky emphasized that this approach lacks the principle of parity: if Ukraine withdraws its forces, Russia must also do the same at an equivalent distance.
Risks and key issues
The head of state pointed out that the idea of creating a 'free economic' or 'demilitarized' zone raises doubts if Russian forces remain in their positions without any restrictions.
“What would prevent Russian troops from advancing further or entering this area disguised as civilians? These are very serious questions,”
— noted Zelensky.
He also reminded that control over such territories should be accompanied by clear international monitoring.
Is Ukraine ready to accept such a compromise?
The president stressed that the current proposals from the US are not fair.
“This is definitely not in Ukraine's interests. But the conversation continues — we need to look for a solution that will be adequate and equitable,”
— he said.
According to Zelensky, the question of possible territorial compromises cannot be decided by one person.
“This question has to be answered by the people of Ukraine — in the format of elections or referendums,”
— he added.
Everything depends on the army
Zelensky emphasized that the positions of Ukrainian military on the front line directly influence the diplomatic conditions discussed by international partners.
“What our military can hold, where they can stand and destroy the occupier, influences the entire diplomatic structure,”
— he noted.
It is also worth noting that Ukraine and Europe recently submitted their proposals to the US regarding a peace plan for resolving the war, which has been under consideration by the administration of American President Trump for a month.
This position of Zelensky indicates the importance of considering Ukraine's national interests in the context of international diplomacy. Ukraine continues to search for solutions that can ensure security and stability in the region, taking into account all risks and challenges facing the country. Discussions around possible compromises continue, and the government is determined to conduct them only with the support of the people.
