Trump warns Iran of US intervention in case of violence against protesters.
According to ТСН: US President Donald Trump warned the Iranian authorities of possible intervention if they resort to violence against peaceful protesters.
He noted on his social media platform Truth Social:
“If Iran, as usual, opens fire and brutally kills peaceful protesters, the United States of America will come to their aid. We are ready to act,”
According to BBC data, nationwide protests have begun in Iran among shop owners outraged by the sharp decline in the value of the Iranian currency against the US dollar. Since Monday, university students have joined the protests, making these demonstrations the largest since 2022 when the country was shocked by the death of Mahsa Amini.
Main Reasons for the Protests
Initially, the actions were aimed at worsening living conditions, but participants also expressed dissatisfaction with Iran's governance policy. Women's rights activists, shop owners, and students chanted slogans like “Death to the dictator” and “Woman, life, freedom.” In Isfahan, protesters called out: “Don't be afraid, we are all together” and repeated “Death to the dictator.” In Dehlorani and Bagmalo, pro-monarchist calls and demands for the overthrow of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei were heard.
Repressions Against Protesters
According to Iran International, in Marvdasht, Iranian security forces shot a protester and the father of two children during the actions on January 1. It was previously reported that tear gas was used in the cities of Nahavand, Asadabad, and Hamadan, while police opened fire.
During clashes in Kuhdasht, 13 policemen and members of the “Basij” were injured by stone-throwing. The state news agency IRNA confirmed the death of a 21-year-old member of the “Basij.”
These events reflect the growing dissent of Iranian society regarding economic hardships and the political leadership of the country, as well as confirm how sensitive protest actions can be. The government’s response, including the use of force, only escalates tensions and raises concern in the international community.
