Putin Missed His Window to End the War Under Trump as Russia’s Economy Declines.
Ukraine-Russia Negotiations
According to UATV: According to Oleksandr Leonov, Executive Director of the Center for Applied Political Studies 'Penta', the Trump presidency offered a potential opportunity to end the war between Russia and Ukraine on terms favorable to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Leonov argues that this chance was squandered, and now Russia’s economy is deteriorating while the conditions for talks between Ukraine and Russia have shifted.
Current negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are centered on ceasefire terms. Leonov believes Putin recognizes he lost his best opportunity to conclude the war on advantageous terms.
“Putin understands that he missed the option to end the war under more favorable conditions,” the expert states. In his view, this situation intensifies pressure on Russia and brings closer the moment when Putin may be forced to make concessions.
Situation in Crimea and New Alliances
Meanwhile, the situation in Crimea remains tense as the region faces growing logistical isolation. This adds further complications to Russia’s already difficult position. Against this backdrop, Lukashenko visited China, where he received a statement affirming Belarus’s independence and sovereignty—a development that could also influence regional dynamics.
As a result, current conditions and Russia’s economic struggles may drive new shifts in peace negotiations with Ukraine. Leonov notes that
“all of this increases pressure and brings closer the moment when Putin will be compelled to make concessions.”These remarks highlight the role of international context and economic factors in shaping the conflict’s trajectory.
The intensifying situation around Ukraine-Russia talks reflects a changing geopolitical landscape that could alter the conflict’s future dynamics. Russia’s economic difficulties and international pressure, particularly from Western nations, may become key drivers pushing toward a compromise. At the same time, Lukashenko’s international activity could signal new alliances and shifts in the regional balance of power, which will also affect the negotiation process.
