Increased Funding for Security and Defense

According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine’s Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has approved a bill that raises security and defense expenditures by 1.56 trillion hryvnias, largely financed by European Union assistance. This brings total security and defense spending to 4.4 trillion hryvnias.

“The document increases spending on the security and defense sector by 1.56 trillion hryvnias, mainly through EU financial aid,” the Parliament stated.

242 lawmakers supported the bill in its second reading. Under the new allocations:

  • 2.3 trillion hryvnias will go toward purchasing weapons and military equipment;
  • Over 1.45 trillion hryvnias will cover military personnel salaries;
  • 559.1 million hryvnias are earmarked for the energy sector’s needs.

The European Union’s financial contribution totals 90 billion euros, with 45 billion euros expected to reach Ukraine this year. These funds will be distributed as follows:

  • 31.8 billion euros will support national defense capabilities;
  • 13.2 billion euros will go toward budget support and covering the fiscal deficit.
“This additional resource became possible thanks to the European Union’s 90 billion euro financial support and other aid programs,” said Yuliia Svyrydenko.

Additionally, 40 billion hryvnias will fund regional resilience plans. The budget amendments were adopted on May 28, when Parliament approved the defense spending increase in principle.

“These funds will be used to protect critical infrastructure and provide communities with backup power sources,” Svyrydenko added.

This boost in Ukraine’s security and defense budget, made possible by EU backing, underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its military readiness amid the current security environment. The significance of these financial injections highlights not only wartime needs but also the necessity of ensuring critical infrastructure stability—a key component of national security.
