Spain’s Renfe Orders 30 High-Speed Trains at €1.78 Billion, Reaching 350 km/h.
New High-Speed Trains for Spain’s Rail Network
According to Novyny.live: Spanish rail operator Renfe has announced plans to acquire 30 high-speed trains, with an option for 10 additional units. The total contract value could reach €1.78 billion, with a base price of approximately €1.37 billion. These new trains will be capable of speeds up to 350 km/h, aiming to boost both travel speed and passenger comfort. For context, this investment comes as Spain continues to expand its already extensive high-speed rail system, the second largest in the world after China.
Each new train will offer at least 450 seats across two classes, catering to a range of passenger needs. The first five units are expected to be delivered within 40 months, with the full fleet arriving within 78 months. Notably, the older Series 100 trains are scheduled for retirement by 2032, reflecting Renfe’s commitment to fleet modernization.
Tender Process and System Integration
An official tender has been launched for 30 trains, including signaling systems such as Spain’s ASFA and the European ETCS. The new trains are planned to integrate with the upcoming Basque Y railway line, connecting cities like Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and San Sebastián. These changes aim to improve Spain’s transport infrastructure and provide faster, more convenient connections between key regions.
This procurement is part of Renfe’s strategy to modernize its fleet and enhance competitiveness in the rail transport sector. Investments in new technology and infrastructure could significantly improve service quality and encourage more travelers to choose rail. Additionally, this shift may benefit the environment, as rail travel is a greener alternative to cars and planes.
