Zelensky on the referendum: why Putin is not interested in a ceasefire.
According to ТСН: President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that dictator Putin has no desire to hold referendums in Ukraine.
The head of state voiced his position during a conversation with journalists.
“Russia does not want any referendum. And this is absolutely clear. Why? First of all, a referendum requires security. They do not want to provide us with security. Ceasefire (the end of hostilities - Ed.) for people until certain issues are resolved,” he said.
Zelensky believes that the Russian side will always look for reasons to avoid a ceasefire.
The president emphasized that holding a referendum is impossible without secure conditions. He also added that important decisions for Ukraine can be made by the parliament.
“I am not against the decision being made by the parliament. There is simply a parliament and there is a referendum. That is, there are possibilities, so to speak. But these are two different approaches. Because the Russians clearly understand that if a decision, one way or another, is supported by the parliament, they can always later say, accuse, that it was an illegitimate parliament, that it has been in operation for more than 5 years,” Zelensky explained.
Zelensky emphasized that no decision of the people of Ukraine in a referendum can be considered illegitimate.
“Because there cannot be an illegitimate people of Ukraine. We have one, the only people of Ukraine. And their decision - the citizens of Ukraine - I consider the most important,” the president concluded.
Earlier, Zelensky also expressed readiness to hold a referendum on the peace plan.
This statement by the president emphasizes the importance of security and legitimacy in decision-making processes in Ukraine. The situation remains tense, and attention to potential referendums becomes increasingly relevant in the conditions of war and constant threats from Russia. How international partners will react to this position of Ukraine will be shown by time.
